The position
This is a part-time, on-call, field-based position located on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH) on the island of Oahu. You must reside on or be willing to relocate to the island of Oahu. Work is projected to go through July 2026 (with possibility to extend). Fieldwork hours are from approximately 6:00 am – 3:00 pm. Fieldwork may occur over a varying number of days, ranging from a single day to multiple days.

Duties include:
  • Monitoring and surveying for Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed Hawaiian waterbirds and Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) species that are present on an active construction site.
  • Identifying Hawaiian waterbirds by sight and sound .
  • Successfully identifying nesting behaviors of Hawaiian waterbirds.
  • Taking clear, effective notes and photos -Interacting and educating construction and base personnel on activities that can be potentially harmful to ESA and MBTA species.
  • Performing high-quality, precise work using scientific protocols.
  • Occasionally working long days, including early mornings and late evenings in the field, as needed.
  • Working together with staff and project stakeholders.
  • Preparing technical summary reports and preparing/reviewing field data.
  • Traveling for field projects, meetings, and/or training.
  • Working odd hours, including early mornings and late evenings in the field, as needed.


  • Our ideal match also has:
  • Experience with Hawaiian fauna and flora species.
  • Familiarity with Hawaiian culture, language, and environmental issues.
  • Current or recent Hawaii residency.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.

  • Probationary period: This position has a six (6) month probationary period.

    Who you are:

    You must have:

  • 4-year college degree in one of the following fields: Wildlife Biology, Conservation Biology, Ornithology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, or a similar course of study.
  • One year of field experience with Hawaiian waterbird research, monitoring, or survey experience OR Three years minimum of direct field experience with Hawaiian waterbird research, monitoring, or surveys (minimum of 640 hours of bird monitoring experience required).
  • Knowledge to follow scientific and standard survey methods, execute the work in the field environment, move across difficult terrain, and perform in adverse weather conditions.
  • Previous experience working on an active construction site (required).
  • Familiarity with state/federal environmental laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft apps, data analysis, software, and tools.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to commute to MCBH Kaneohe.
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check and be authorized to work in the U.S.

  • Salary
    $27-$29/hr (dependent on experience)

    The Position:
    This is a full-time position in our Bellingham, Washington, office. Previous experience of at least six months conducting wetland delineations in the Pacific Northwest is required. Great ideas can (and do) come from anywhere. We encourage our team to work together across positions and roles. Peers and supervisors alike work together to supply outstanding customer service and conduct all components of our projects.


    Duties may include:
  • Perform and assist with wetland delineations according to USACE Manual and Regional Supplements, wetland ratings, function assessments, mitigation monitoring, mitigation/wetland restoration planning, and Ordinary High Water Mark (OHWM) determinations.
  • Help design, plan, direct, and conduct research projects.
  • Prepare technical reports and permit documents.
  • Assist with the development of project, research, and grant proposals to various agencies and entities, including budget and schedule development.
  • Conduct work year-round in adverse weather and rough terrain.
  • Develop, maintain, and foster client relationships.
  • Collaborate with Hamer staff and teaming partners on a variety of natural resource projects.

  • Who You Are:
    This role is perfect for someone with experience in wetland delineations in the Pacific NW. Communicating effectively and functioning as part of a team are essential to this role. You should possess strong technical writing skills and experience writing technical reports and/or scientific literature. The potential for significant travel, including occasional extended overnight travel, is possible for this position.

    Our ideal candidate has:
  • B.S. degree or higher in an environmental discipline.
  • A minimum of six months of wetland delineation work in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Botanical skills to identify PNW plants strongly preferred.
  • Must be comfortable working in both urban and remote field settings as well as in an office.
  • Experience using data collection electronics such as GPS units and field tablets.
  • Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office and 4WD vehicles.
  • Experience using ArcGIS and other remote sensing tools is a plus.

  • Salary:

    We offer a competitive salary that is based on experience. The salary range for this position is $52,000 - $58,240 annually (equivalent to $25-$28/hour).
